Extending your accounts filing deadline: before, not after

More time is possible only BEFORE the deadline, and only for reasons outside your control. What qualifies, how to apply, and the ARD move people confuse it with.

The one rule that decides everything

An extension must be applied for BEFORE your filing deadline passes. After the deadline there is no extension, no discretion and no negotiation — the penalty exists from the first day and the only question left is which band you land in. If you are reading this with days in hand and a genuine problem, apply today; the application takes minutes.

What counts as an exceptional reason

Companies House grants extensions for events outside your control that stop the accounts being finished: a serious illness of the person doing them, a fire or flood that took the records, an unexpected event of that weight. What does not qualify is the ordinary friction of running a company — workload, an accountant who is busy, software trouble, or the fact that the company is dormant and the accounts feel like a formality. The bar is 'exceptional', and they mean it.

How to apply

The application is online (the 'apply to extend your accounts filing deadline' service on GOV.UK): company number, an email address, the reason, and any supporting evidence you can attach. Decisions usually come quickly. One hard ceiling applies: an extension cannot normally take your total filing period beyond 12 months from the end of the financial year.

The ARD move people confuse it with

Changing the accounting reference date is a different lever with a different test: an extension asks Companies House to accept an exceptional reason, while shortening the year moves the deadline by operation of the rules, no reason required. It is a legitimate tool with permanent side effects, and it is available only while the accounts are not yet overdue. If that is the route you are weighing, our guide on changing your accounting reference date sets out the limits and the consequences; this page is about applying for more time.

If the deadline already passed

Skip the extension page entirely — it cannot help now. File the accounts as fast as they can honestly be prepared, because the penalty bands run on elapsed time: £150 becomes £375 at one month late and £750 at three. For a dormant company the accounts are a page; being late by less is the only optimisation left.
